I'm in trimester WHAT?

Today marks 13 weeks, 2 days.

I can't believe we've gotten this far after so many false starts over the past five years. It is so strange to have pregnancy things magically seem to be working. Knock wood, not taking anything for granted, one moment at a time. Hard not to wonder what is different now? So many fresh IVFs, and transfers, and three natural pregnancies on top of three IVF pregnancies. But all that didn't work. And now? Now it seems like this baby is practically growing itself (knock wood, not taking anything for granted, one moment at a time).

Will's mom says that the difference this time is that when Will's father passed away this summer, he began overseeing our trying to conceive journey and has helped this last transfer actually (finally) be the one to work.

Sounds as likely as anything.

Whatever it is, it feels so miraculous. So hard to fathom.

I'm thrilled right now, even if I am a bit confused about where I am trimester-wise in pregnancy land. I think I'm maybe in the second trimester? According to some sources, apparently. Other references make it sound like I need to get to the end of 14 weeks first.

How do you count the trimesters? Is one method more popular and accepted than the others? I'd be most curious.

But count the days and weeks however you want. We are decidedly, amazingly (knock me over with a feather) pregnant. Pregnant enough that I have purchased one pair of maternity pants and some drapey shirts (hoping to hide this another month or so from the prying masses at work). Not so pregnant as to really be showing, but pregnant enough to feel like I'm looking rather fat. Pregnant enough to be off all hormone support now for over a week (and yes, we snuck in an extra blood draw at the end of last week and estrogen and progesterone looked just fine...rising some even off of the meds).

It is absolutely crazy to behold,

but I am pregnant.

At least for today.

And I still can't believe it.

Mo

  5. I say 13 weeks marks the 2nd trimester whether the experts like it or not! I'm just always excited to get to that point so I like to use the earlier week. :)

    Congrats on 2nd trimester!!!

  6. Yay! So happy to see this post-- maternity clothing?!?! Wowee, that makes things feel just a smidge more real, doesn't it? So very happy that for whatever reason lucky #7 (you really *DO* need to think of a nickname) seems to be in it to win it! So very happy for you and Will!

  7. Believe it girl!! You are very pregnant :)

I was bugged by the trimester Confusion too - I think it is when you reach the end of the 12th week (thus 13 weeks completed x 3 trimesters = 39 weeks. So maybe technically it is when you reach 13w 2.3days??) :).

  8. I vote for 13w2d...that's what I used. I hear the 12 weeks thing a lot. Apparently it's used because at 12 weeks the baby is basically formed and just has to mature and grow? I've also heard it's because at 36 weeks you're full term...so who knows. I think it's easiest to take 40 weeks and divide by 3. So 13w2d for the second and 26w2d for the second. Which mean I only have 2w3d until I'm no longer in the 2nd trimester. Yikes!

  9. So happy for you! Smile... Its real!!

  10. Given that a full term human pregnancy is 40 weeks, (but that anything over 37 is considered full term), if you divide 40 by 3, you get 13w3d. For ease in calculating, my understanding has always been that you are in the 2nd trimester once you enter your 14th week of pregnancy (which would be anything over 13 weeks (13 means 13 completed weeks and one day over means the start of your 14th).

No matter how you calculate it, yes, you are IN your 2nd tri. Welcome, mama!

(PS I am not sure that I fully understood that you had 3 naturally conceived pregnancies in addition to IVF pregnancies. I had 4 naturally conceived and 3 ART conceived (well, technically 4 if you count this fragile one) with one living child. I look forward to your next 2 trimesters...you WILL get there!)

  11. T2! I say it is whatever you think it is. I had to make myself a calendar to figure out what month I was in at most points. I also tended to underreport where I was at most of the time just clinging to whatever week I'd managed to make it to. You are so on your way, Mo!

  12. I say Trimester 2!! You go, girl--congrats on that milestone :)

  13. Happy 2nd trimester! So happy for you guys!

  14. I asked my OB and he said, "you're not really pregnant the first 2 weeks of your cycle so those don't count. So a human pregnancy is really only 38 weeks and you're not in the first week until 12 weeks of being pregnant, therefore it's the 14th week of your cycle when you're actually in the second trimester...." I said oh forget you....I'm in the second trimester at 12 weeks....of course I asked this question when I was actually closer to 16 weeks pregnant so the point was moot, but whatever...
    I say you're there!!!

  15. Mo ~ I love checking in on you and continuing to see that everything is progressing perfectly. I'm still right behind you (13w1d today) and I was also just thinking what trimester this is. I was thinking getting to 13 is 2nd trimester, but then for some reason I though I might need to complete this week. Anyway, I'll keep checking in and I love seeing your awesome progress!

  16. Your disbelief made me giggle. I'm very happy for you and your husband, and as always I will continue to pray for you and your little one. Here's to hoping the next six months fly by. Just imagine this time next year your little one will be 6 months!!!

  17. Oh forgot to say that I say I think you're in your second trimester.

  18. Totally 2nd trimester! Speaking of maternity stuff--I have some clothes that I've been too lazy to get rid of--are you enjoying the maternity shopping experience or should I bring them down to the city? Also have to find out when you're going to start allowing baby gear in your house, because I've got some things you should have. Um, also? So very happy for you that I can hardly see straight. Will you be around the 4th/5th? I'd love to see you.

  19. BIG smile from me reading that :)

As for the trimesters, yeah, there does not seem to be a consensus. Some say the end of 12 weeks, some 13, some 14. I was so freaked out I just sort of took the 14th week as the goal, and considered myself "maybe 2nd tri" until then.

Either way, you are doing great. So glad to hear your are doing well off all supplements too - I knew you would. Its happening Mo! Its really happening!

  20. So happy for you, Mo! It's such a great feeling to be officially out of the first trimester!

  21. Oh hurray! I'm following your day to day, week to week pregnancy reports almost as closely as I kept an eye on my own. Thank you for the privilege of watching this journey and cute little baby grow!

  22. Pregnant 'enough' indeed!!! NOT being in week 12, or lower, is a huge milestone. I remember really feeling a release after this. So go ahead, doesn't matter what 'they' say about which trimester you're in.....

    YOU"RE PREGGERS!!!

Whoop!!! And 'enough' is all you need!

Keep up the great work little one!

  23. Over from ICLW...

I can't even imagine the happiness and wonder of this. I love the idea that your FIL is watching over you. I'm so very happy for you and your husband!

  24. I am so happy for you Mo.

As for trimesters, this is one thing the NO ONE agrees how you should count. I'm more than a bit anal when it comes to math so I always went with the 13 w 3 day designation for the length of a trimester.

  25. I always went by the ticker that got me to the next trimester the soonest! My OB went by the one that takes 40 weeks and divides by 3 - so according to him, you'd be in your second trimester RIGHT NOW!

I am just so happy for you!!!!

  26. Yay! Break out the sparkling cider for a toast!!!

  27. You deserve this so much Mo!!! So much!! I am thrilled for you!

  28. I say 2nd trimester. :o) So thrilled every time I read an update.

  29. I've always been surprised at how confusing the X-mester division is. 40 / 3 = 13.3333333, so 13 weeks, 2 days is 1/3 of the way through 40 weeks. That and 26 weeks, 4 days were the marks I took for my X-mesters. (And then Gwen came along at 39 weeks, 6 days, to round out everything nicely).

Regardless of how you name it, congrats on getting this far! You just watched, you'll keep posting "I still can't believe it" posts, and then suddenly end up with a baby. :)

  30. I know, it's confusing isn't it?! I went through the same 2nd trimester dilemma. It was like if I chose one of the earlier times I might jinx things.

But I think you're are firmly in the second tri hun! So happy for you. :)

  31. Happy 2nd trimester!! So, so happy for you!! :)

  32. Hooray!

I know I always felt better about being in the second trimester at 14 weeks, but it was such a great feeling to get to 13 regardless.

BTW, if you're not feeling physically better yet, don't worry. I started feeling that 2nd trimester comfort level somewhere around 16 weeks.

You're going to get to 16 weeks, you know. Go for it.

  33. It's crazy how inconsistent the message is... I had one app on my phone tell me that 24 weeks was the third trimester... SAY WHAT???

Personally, I always went with the latest measures... so 14 weeks for 2nd trimester and 28 weeks for 3rd. That way there was no question and I didn't feel like I was "cheating" the system in any way.
