OB appointment 17 weeks 4 days

My husband Will and I met with the OB today.

And wonderfully, amazingly, all still seems to be going well.

She did an ultrasound and I had my usual immediate thought that the baby had died, but she was fine. This week, we could see her swallowing fluid on the ultrasound. The OB said this is a sign of an intact neurological system. So Yay! My tiny daughter is a champ at drinking her own amniotic fluid!

My blood pressure and weight checked out fine. The OB also answered our questions about my continuing nausea, almost constant leg pain, and fatigue. (I know - can you believe that these are my current "serious" complaints?! I am so lucky). It looks like compression socks may be in my future. The nausea and vomiting are likely to get better in the next month, but may not resolve completely. All that is ok. I am thrilled to be pregnant. Thrilled to be at this place. Still incredulous.

We also would like to take a vacation at the end of June so we were asking the OB's opinion on the safest places to go. She said Europe or Hawaii are both fine, but in Europe, we have to watch the cheese, can't have proscuitto, etc. So that makes me think we might prefer it post-pregnancy. So it seems likely that we will head to Hawaii!! I think the flight will be a bit tough, but it will be a wonderful trip if we can do it.

For your viewing pleasure, here is the little one. To me, it looks like she finds her head intolerably weighty. Poor thing!! She's propping herself up on my placenta!

Mo

My head is sooooo heavy!

  5. So very happy that things continue to progress both normally and smoothly for you (minor inconveniences of pregnancy notwithstanding).

    Good job, mama!

  6. Hawaii is a rough flight from the east coast. Make sure to bring your compression socks. It's a great time of the year to visit though.

  7. Oh, Mo, you sound so happy. It makes me happy. And Hawaii will be lovely!

  8. Definitely compression socks! When I was pregnant I got the full-length hose and cut the top to make it comfortable. I just whip-stitched a few times around the snip to keep it from running further.

Hawaii is such a perfect place to go and just relax! Sounds like a great getaway. Let me know if you want a stopover in LA on the way there!

  10. o0o0o0o Hawaii is beautiful but you might want to do things pregnant women can't like surfing lessons etc. I hope you have a wonderful babymoon. :)

really? hawaii? it sounds so, so far away. how long will you be gone for? i worry for you, mo! but at the same time, i think- the fact is that things are going GREAT! why not go to hawaii?! good for you. bring those compression socks, take it easy, maybe build some time inbetween flights?

how wonderful to read the simple words 'my husband and i went to the OB...' ... and the OB said to go to hawaii!! woowee!

  18. Big brains are HEAVY! So glad to hear the news you've been sending out... Hawaii sounds lovely; does Florida have crazy great beaches too?? Maybe easier on those feet of yours with a shorter flight... My husband used to go to Captiva Island with his family when he was 'younger'! haha... A holiday is always a great idea! Happy planning! xoxo

  19. She said Europe or Hawaii are both fine, but in Europe, we have to watch the cheese, can't have proscuitto, etc.

Having recently been (successfully) pregnant while in Europe, I can say that the hype about cheeses/meats/etc. is something that really only the Americans worry about. During the first trimester I was told by my Dutch midwife to avoid fresh cheeses, but that they were fine later. Hard cheeses were never an issue, nor cured meats. One thing that was interesting was that either smoked or cured fish was ok, but not fish that had been both smoked and cured, since there was something about how the processes interacted that increased the chance of bacteria. The only food I really seriously gave up while pregnant was alcohol, and even then I'd still have a small taste of my husband's beer occasionally (it just isn't fair going to an micro-brewery festival 7 months pregnant!).

But of course I wouldn't recommend you do anything that makes you uncomfortable, and having done both the trans-Atlantic trip and traveling in Europe (we've hit Belgium, the UK, Germany, Denmark, and last week Sweden) post-baby, I can assure you that if you come to Europe after your little girl arrives, you'll have a good time.

  21. Oooh, Hawaii. One of my favorite places for a relaxing beach vacation. So much more interesting and beautiful than the Carribean (at least in terms of landscape). I have been many, many times and recommend going to either the Big Island (amazing, unbelievably varied nature there) or Kauai (quieter, really laid back, lush). I hope you have an amazing time wherever you go. And congrats on 17 weeks!!

  23. We went on our babymoon to England and had a blast. It was easy to skip the (very few) things that I shouldn't have and there was so much to see! We did a bus tour and so we got to see a lot while still 'taking it easy'. Yay for one more good OB appointment!

  24. Look at that beautiful baby girl! Have a wonderful babymoon!

  28. You sound fabulous. I am so happy for you.
wrt vacationing -- we went to Rome and Paris, two of our favorite cities, when I was about 22 weeks. It was fabulous, despite my swollen feet. The only thing I really avoided were the raw milk cheeses and raw food (oysters, tartare). But Hawaii is also wonderful, and the idea of not having to suck in ones stomach in a bathing suit is very appealing. If Hawaii, highly recommend the 4 seasons maui and big island. Both awesome.

  29. her spine is gorgeous! what a great shot.

I think it's more than just the food in europe. you may tend to be far more active, exploring, doing, walking, pushing it, etc. while you can be super active in hawaii too, you can also just lounge in the sun, float in the ocean or pool, sip coconut mango smoothies and take leisurely walks in the sand. it may be more relaxing and easier on your body. europe can be fabulous but also exhausting, ykwim? if you choose hawaii, be sure to find out what fish are safe to eat in any quantity. fun!!

  32. Wonderful news! I'm so happy for the three of you that everything is continuing to go well and be uneventful (relatively speaking - I know it's still nerve-wracking at times). I love that you can see each of the vertebrae in the spine.

  33. Hey, so this is a little late, and as such, you may not get it, but when I was pregnant, my legs and ankles swelled to a horrific size... after the boy was born, I had back and hip problems so I went to a massage therapist... he told me they can 'drain' the leg and ankle fluid. It's more like re-distributing the fluid throughout the body than draining, but might help with the legs.
Checking in daily and hoping with all hopes for you three! I got the goose-bumps when you said 'My tiny daughter'!! We're always thinking of you.
    xo

  40. I stumbled across this blog tonight (a post from 2010) and have read every single word since then.  My husband and I have lost 4 consecutive pregnancies and are currently 6w1d pregnant with a looming ultrasound tomorrow morning.  I cried tears of sorrow and tears of joy through the last two years of your journey.  Thank you for sharing the emotions.  And mostly thank you for the hope.  I don't know how to walk into tomorrow's ultrasound feeling good, but after reading your blog, I feel better.  Thank you eternally.

I plan to keep following and keep cheering you on!

  48. Even though I live in Europe, I would recommend Hawaii for a more relaxing babymoon. We stayed at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, and each morning went snorkeling with wild sea turtles. I think you'll have an amazing time.
