First non-stress test was...not stressful!



I went in early this morning for my first non-stress test on the antepartum unit at the hospital. Somehow I was under the impression it would be an ultrasound, but it was not, was just monitoring of baby's movement and heartbeat while I laid on my left side. They said it could take anywhere between 20 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the baby's behavior.

Magpie passed with flying colors. I actually found the whole thing fairly relaxing and thought it was nice for me to get used to the monitoring...it will be good to have as many things as possible feel routine and downright boring before I actually get to labor and delivery so that I'm not feeling like I need to attend to anything but dealing with the labor itself when the time comes.

Will and I completed a Hypnobabies class recently and I think these weekly NSTs will be a great time to practice my hypnosis. Of course I need to practice a whole lot more than once a week, but it will be a good, dedicated time to do so. One of these days, maybe I'll blog about the class and preparation itself...I think it will definitely help when my "birthing time" arrives, but I don't know if it will be a complete panacea for all childbirth pain/discomfort...we shall see...we would like to do this birth thing unmedicated...or at least get the party well underway prior to receiving pain meds. Anything, including medical self-hypnosis than can help is most welcome.

Oh, and my blood pressure? 100/60 when they took it this AM. Funny how low it's been lately. Not bad for an advanced-in-her-years diabetic pregnant woman.

So today. The NST. Boring, boring, boring. Which is great. I laid there almost napping and Magpie boxed and kicked and her heart rate ranged from the 170s to the 150s.

And then I grabbed some breakfast and went to work. All good. We'll do it again next week (and the week after that, and the week after that...) just for fun.

  3. Hey, Mo...the biophysical profile DOES combine an NST with an ultrasound. So, if Magpie flunks an NST, you might find yourself the lucky recipient of a spontaneous ultrasound. I did multiple times, when the boy would promptly wake up...

  8. Okay, what?! You're doing Hypnobabies! What a FABULOUS decision! We did it and felt the course was well worth it even before our baby arrived. After four prior miscarriages, I found myself approaching everything about our miraculous pregnancy with fear and trepidation. The hypnobabies helped me relax and start approach pregnancy as something to be cherished, enjoyed, and joyful about. For that alone the course was worth it! I was very skeptical it would eliminate pain from our birthing time, but really embraced the philosophy, did about 80% of the work they recommended, and didn't realize I was in my birthing time until my water broke! My baby was born 90 minutes later PAIN FREE. I thought it was bull***t but that made me a true believer. I even found out later that I broke my tailbone, so that in itself is proof to me that the hypnobabies approach works. Best wishes and awesome decision!!

    I have to say -- I'm surprised that you're worried about the pain of the birth; you went through so much pain up until now that I'm thinking that whatever you have to go through, heck, you've been there, done that and gotten the t-shirt. :)

    And WOW about the above commenter -- start that hypnobabies class hard core. THAT is an endorsement!

  11. Glad to hear the NST was uneventful - just the way you want it. I really enjoyed the few NST I did, it was soothing to listen to her little (fast!!) heartbeat. I'm glad you get to do them often, it will ease any worry you might still have, i hope.

  13. I have to echo what K wrote- we did hypnobirthing, too, and Charlotte's emergence was PAINLESS! It wasn't comfortable, and the stitching to repair a slight tear was painful, but the birth itself was truly without pain. Five and a half hours from water breaking to delivery. "Surges" for about 2.5 hours. No real pushing. And I have to admit, I did very little of the practicing we were instructed to do.

    NSTs are a great nap time for the mommy-to-be. I made a habit of doing what I knew would wake up the baby- drinking a cold cold drink when I was carrying Charlotte (and avoiding food right before... she always fell asleep after I ate), and a having a little snack with Maggie. It's also a good time to meet some of the staff, if the NSTs are in L&D like in my little hospital.

  14. Wow, this is all so great... Just don't forget to enjoy yourself as much as you can right now... I fear I may have taken my 'pregnancy' itself for granted, just waiting for the end of the journey. But I look back now (after seven years of trying for another) and I miss that I didn't go out and get more massages, or even just take more quiet moments at home to play music to the baby or rub my belly or whatever. There are only so many days left to go and I hope they are sweet, sweet, sweet.

  16. So glad that you're using Hypnobabies-- another huge supporter (and 2 time mama) with the program. Although I was a little confused that you only mention one class? We had to go to a series of 5-- are you just beginning? I know that we found it super helpful and while I listened to the MP3s for my second birth I feel like having the actual classes got me more ready, but both births were unmedicated and honestly pain free. (Well the second one was uncomfortable because she came within 3 minutes of my water breaking) but all manageable and I really think that it will help you to trust your body and the process. Yay for another wonderful update and an uneventful stress test!
