Magpie at 28 weeks...in 3D

We had an ultrasound today to check on the location of the placenta and to see how the baby is growing.

All good news (phew!)

My placenta is now 4.5 cm away from my cervix, so no more previa issues, thankfully.

We also checked the cervical length - long and closed. Yay!

And Ms. Magpie is measuring in the 25th percentile...I think they estimated her weight as 2.3 pounds. So...so far, no macrosomic baby here!

Right now, baby is head down and facing to my right side, but they said she can still move around quite a bit.

We met briefly with a maternal fetal medicine specialist after the scan to go over the results. All looks good he said. Will asked if we can keep the baby from getting too big by carefully controlling my diet and blood sugar levels. The doctor said unfortunately no. That the diet/glucose are the two factors we can control, but that there is evidence that the diabetic state itself can cause large for gestational age infants. Boo! (He said something about hyperinsulinema and amino acid secretion...but I didn't catch all of the details).

It's not the greatest picture...hopefully she won't be this lumpy in real life...but here is our first 3D image of Ms. Magpie. Oh my, I can't even process this. There is a little person inside of me. How did that ever happen?

  1. So happy for you! And don't worry...she won't be lumpy when she is born! She will be 5 million times cuter that the ultrasound photos and those are pretty darn cute! I can totally understand the fear! I was absolutely out of my mind scared to death when I was pregnant. You're almost there!! Not too much longer!

  2. Wow, yes, she certainly is a little person! So cute! Do you see resemblance to you and/or Will yet? My brother just got a 3-D pic for my soon-to-be niece. These things are so cool! Thanks for the good wishes on my blog too...

  5. Yep, that is a little person :) And hooray for all good news! I'm sure that's hard to process after all it took for you to get to this point!

  6. I had GD with my 2nd baby and was actually diagnosed pretty early at 20ish weeks. I was very careful in what I ate, exercised 4-5 times a week but ultimately ended up on glyburide towards the end. (Just when you think you have it all figured out, your body changes and you have to start over again!) Anyway, my baby was born at just under 7 1/2 pounds, definitely not huge!!

Don't stress yourself out over it. I cried after every reading that wasn't perfect and my Dr eventually convinced me that it wasn't anything I was doing, just my body and I couldn't really do anything about it.

Just do your best and trust what your Dr's tell you! (SO easier said than done, I know!!)

  7. She is lovely! Congrats Mo, you are doing such a good mommy job!

  8. Ohhh, tearing up here. She is lovely! And don't be worried about the lumps. Our 3-D ultrasound photos had us convinced that Jonathan's face was going to be 95% nose (even more so because Alan's grandfather was, sadly, 95% nose), and he has the cutest little button nose you've ever seen. So happy for you!

  9. I had 2 HUGE babies and didn't have GD with either, they checked me toward the end of both pregnancies since both babies were really big.. 10lb 14 oz and 10lb 9 oz... I think baby size had a lot to do with gentic's, I know plenty of women that have had 6,7, 8 lb babies with GD.

  10. She is perfect! And, over 2lbs is GREAT! Keep cooking, Magpie, but 2+lbs is good good good.

I didn't have GD but I had a 9lb 12oz baby last year. You know what? I loved having a chunky monkey. I never felt like I was going to break her. Also, she ate and slept like a total champ from day one. So, no, GD isn't a good thing, but don't let the potential for a large baby freak you out. More to love and kiss and nibble!

  11. Love the 3D image and you must be over the moon with the surrealness of it all.

I am curious as to what your cervix is measuring as I'd like to know what other OBs consider "long". Do you know?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think they said my cervix was measuring 4.5 or something...I bet "long" can be much shorter than that, tho!!

  14. While I am really happy for you and grateful everything is going well I can't help but be slighlty offended and put off that you are worried your baby will be fat. It's a baby....they are supposed to be chubby. I ate very well minus a few cupcakes, i don't eat candy or fast food or drink soda. My son was still 11lbs at birth and is the picture of health. (I passed my glucose screenings with flying colors) So i can't help but be put off that you are focusing on her being slightly chubby at birth.

  15. She is absolutely beautiful! And it sounds like, GD aside, your body is performing beautifully. Thinking of you, and oh, the end of October is just not that far away!

  18. Isn't the first 3D pic amazing? Congratulations!

  19. YES! A little person in there. Freaky and wonderful. Your little girl! Your daughter! Have you said it out loud to see how it feels? "My daughter." I still get a little choked up when I say it. Much love. xoxo

  20. She is stunning. I cannot wait for her grand entry into your lives (but not too soon Magpie! Another 10-12 weeks would be good enough!)

  21. When she arrives she will be the most amazingly beautiful baby/child/person you ever saw.
Worrying about her size, big or small, is like worrying about controlling the weather. Really not very productive. But normal.
Looking forward to hearing what you learn on Wed.
Have faith and know you are doing everything possible to protect and care for your daughter. Blink your eyes and she will want the car key.

  22. Awe, how precious. It looks like she might have an adorable dimple in her chin! :)

  23. Wow, that is an awesome 3d pic. She is beautiful and will be even more beautiful when you see her in person in a few months

  24. She is simply adorable! I will keep you in my thoughts that she doesn't get too big. I am sure you are worried about PTL and/or a c section, but I know quite a few Moms with GD who's babies stayed "average" sized. One friend did give birth at 34 weeks to a 7 pounder but she was perfectly healthy and went home in 3 days. I know you can't help but worry though! Perfectly normal Mom thing to do :)

  25. Just to chime in, I didn't have GD with either pregnancy but had two over 9 pound babies. Both were very healthy and well, and both were non-medicated vaginal deliveries. So don't worry about size-- u/s sizing is always a guess. Two days before my 1st was born they said 7 lb. 5; she was 9 lbs. 1 oz. and I doubt that grew that much in 2 days. You're both doing great. Any chance of a belly shot or nursery progress photos? No pressure, just nosey.

  29. So happy for you, Mo!! Wow.
Cici-- I highly highly doubt Mo's anxiety over her baby's size has any vanity or weight-as-appearance component to it. It's about health and safety--hers and the baby's.
You had an abnormally large baby (by any medical standards not recommended nor the norm) and it's wonderful that all was well for you, but that doesn't make it the gold standard of baby size.

  30. Hi Mo, I've been reading your blog for a while now, and haven't posted a lot of comments, but I am so happy that little Magpie is doing fantastic... I was diagnosed GD during a bout with bronchitis and never had super high numbers after that. My kiddo was born 1 week after his due date and weighed 8lbs. 3oz. and is a fantastic amazing 17 month old now :) if you ever want to talk about the GD or ask advice about diet controlling it, please feel free to e-mail me!!

  31. Happy 3rd trimester, and OH MY Happy Magpie! HOly crap Mo, 28 weeks, wow and wow and wow and wonderful.

    Chills and happiness here,
    I'm just sayin'.

    big love to you,
    Kate

  32. We need an update, mama!!

  33. I had GD and gave birth to a 6 lb 10 oz baby with no complications, so don't worry too much. Having GD doesn't guarantee a big baby. Just do your best to eat well. I ate a lot of salads - my favorite was a caprese - yummy and I always had great numbers after it.
