When to test with HPTs?

So here we are on 4dp5dt....

I looked through my HPT stash and have six tests in my possession, so I've been trying to figure out how to dole them out to myself.

Today is only 4dp5dt - that seems too early to test, especially for someone with a limited HPT stash.

I tested positive with Magpie on 6dp5dt, so perhaps I'll try testing then? On the other hand, I know how horrible it is to keep seeing the dreaded white space where a second line is supposed to be. The fear of seeing that makes me want to wait to test.

What do you guys think? When should I start to test?

I know some of you will say to wait until the beta...which would be Sunday...but my silly local clinic doesn't test betas on the weekend. Bah!

So I might not get an official beta until the Tuesday after Labor Day, because of the holiday weekend. I don't know that I can wait that long.

I welcome all wisdom. I'm going a bit batty over here.

Mo

  1. 6dp5dt is when I usually get the BFPs. In the case of multiples it may show little early. So my advice is to test in the morning of 6dp5dt. Good luck and I truly hope you see another BFP result and successful outcome! Stay positive!

  3. I'm a POAS-aholic and usually start testing at 8DPO. With DS1, I got a positive at 9DPO. With DS2, I waited all the way until the night of 9DPO, and got a positive then. I know, I have so much self-control! With my losses, same deal...except I could tell from the lack of progression that something wasn't right.

    1. I also got positives twice at 9DPO.

  5. I would've tested today...but I'm very impatient.

  6. I'm not much of a tester because I saw too many blank/white results so I would wait until Sunday to test.

  7. I think the earliest I got a positive was 8dp3dt but usually I waited until 9dp3dt. Me and my abundant patience :)

  8. When I've tested too early in the past and got a negative
…. it was much more upsetting than I thought it would be.
I thought I could handle seeing a negative but knowing it is too early. This time and last time I waited until beta day.
This time being a singleton… it was a lower number at 70 and initially (first few seconds) it almost appeared negative…a line definitely showed up fairly quickly but was pretty faint looking at first until it dried. My beta day fell on a Sunday too… but not a holiday like you. I did find a lab that was open on Sundays but never got the result until late Monday!
Thankfully hpts exist and I didn't have to really wait!!! Based on the color of my line I was guessing between 50-100. I have way too much experience looking at hpt lines on the First response early result test. :)

    1. i don't think i will. i think i'd be too devastated by the white staring back at me. and the devastation might be for nothing... i'll skip false devastation... it would be pretty cool if it was a positive tomorrow, though!

  10. i never test. For me, the cons of the disappointment staring me in the face (rather than over the phone) outweigh the pros of some possible early good news. What are pros and cons of early testing for you?Either way I'd wait until at least 8 dp if you can stand it because of the heartbreak of a negative that may or may not be false.

  11. Well, as I remember it with Tiny Boy, I had one of those fertility patient squint at the space until you see a line results at 4dp5dt...and a clear as day result at 6dp5dt. But I also did some crazy things with HPTs that I don't recommend ;)

If it were me I'd probably start testing tomorrow, knowing that negative isn't necessarily negative, but positive certainly isn't wrong!

  13. So much luck and good thoughts to you. I had my twin Ivf positive at 4dp5dt. It was faint enough that I threw it out and then went back to look again.

  14. I have talked my clinic into giving me a lab order for Friday with stat. Although it won't be 50 and I will still have to check again it will give me an idea before the holiday

  15. I have gone from testing multiple times a day from about 4dp5dt to forgoing HPT altogether. At first I thought it would be useful even if just to see a chemical pregnancy. But once you have done everything you can to help implantation, as you have, there is the pro of a couple of days earlier joy versus the con of the agony of the cp or blank test. Personally my latest strategy is not testing and letting the beta phone call go to voicemail.
If you do want to test, most people I see getting BFPs get them at the earliest 5dp5dt.
Given that that is still very early, and could be a false negative, you could test then and see how you feel about more testing versus waiting for beta.
I am hoping so hard for a positive for you!

  16. Keeping fingers crossed for you, and yeah, I'd never be able to wait for the beta. In a similar circumstance with my 2nd pregnancy--final attempt, with thawed and goodish 5-day blast, though only one in my case--I got my first faint positive on day 6 and was dumbfounded that anything would show up so early. BUT I did have a weird sense late on day 3 that it had worked; for just a few seconds, it felt like milk letdown. I never would have noticed it if I hadn't already had one child and breastfed him. Please let us know as soon as you test!

  17. you could go get more tests at dollar tree (do they have them where you live?),
then test now and 5 times a day until the cows come home...

or, use your 6 and start at 12dpo and test 1x/day until beta.

I guess it depends on how depressed and distracted you are going to be if you are getting bfn's that might not really be bfn's because it is too early...

I always waited until after beta, mo. too chicken and afraid I would seriously jump off a bridge if I saw an ivf bfn. but you know, you are either a poas'er or not...
I think you are, so my advice really is to get more tests and test till you get your fill.

uggh. 2ww sux, no way around it. give that magpie a huge hug, and let her hug you...*that* is awesome :)

  18. Can you get a BETA Friday? I'll admit, I tested 4dp5dt this last time and it was negative. 5dp5dt and it was the lightest positive I've ever seen, but it was there. I should have bought stock in dollar tree tests after that! In the past I waited for the BETA because was so scared of that big white space.

  19. I think there is a link on one of these websites showing when people get their first BFP: 9 DPO is super duper rare (the day you are on today), 10 DPO is still low, 11-12 DPO is where most people fall. I would get BFPs reliably by the afternoon of 10 DPO, while I would be negative in the morning. It was pretty neat: like clockwork. It makes sense that you would get a positive each pregnancy at more or less the same time, as it depends not only on time of impantation, but also on HCG level produced by the baby, which is influenced by the genetics of both the mom and the dad: some people are crazy high HCG producers, while others are lower.

  20. I always test early, in my warped brain I like the first test to be when I KNOW it will be negative, like 3 or 4dp5dt. Then test a few times a day after that, knowing it can't get any worse than the day before!

  21. I've always tested, for me it was like letting myself down easy if that makes sense? I hated having false hope and then having a stranger blow my world up over the phone with the bad news...that said in all of my failed cycles I always got a period before beta anyway. With my 2 bfps I had positive hpts by 6dp5dt (1 fresh, 1 fet). My long winded way of saying if you decide to test, 6dp5dt is a reasonable time to start. Wishing you all the luck and positive vibes in all the land Mo! I truly hope this works for you guys.

  22. not sure what you'll decide, but the women who have commented certainly have lots of wisdom to share. My strategy was to wait until I knew the answer would be unequivocal, which psychologically felt easier to deal with than a maybe.
Holding lots of hope for you, Mo.
