Sundays of grace #3

1. Living in a big city, but close to the country: Will's parents have some land a couple hours north of the city and we love going there. It is so still and beautiful. Snow blankets the rolling hills and the night sky is black, punctuated by what seems like a thousand stars. We love getting to be out in nature and away from the hectic energy of the city. It's a wonderful time to regroup, to just be, to reenergize.

2. Trains: I love to travel by train. The land unfolding through the window outside, the ability to slice through the country away from cars and see small towns and ponds, hills and creeks. Train travel feels so simple - just you and your bag, life pared down to its essentials. The soothing vibration of the car as it rolls down the tracks.

3. Fresh baked bread: The scent of it baking, filling your entire home. The sharing of it with others around a table. Will and I bought bread at a farmer's market yesterday and toasted it up with butter and jam this morning. So warm and filling.

  2. i love being able to be a country mouse and a city mouse, too! Boston is only three short hours from my parents' house in Maine and there is nothing like the salty smell of the ocean!

thank you for your sundays of grace!

  5. I want fresh bread too! We live near a city too - but we have a farm market with the best apple pies in the whole world only two miles from us with apple orchards and the like!

  7. all of these are lovely. I lived in the country, in college, and the black starry nights were so lovely.
When I lived in NYC, I loved taking metro north, it was so easy, and there is so much to see.

  8. Your description of bread might be the most delicious-sounding thing ever. Have you considered a second career as a food writer?? I am really craving some warm bread now....

  9. Mmmmm, yummy, I swear freshly baked bread is one of my favourite smells ever and eating it is why I look like I do.

When we travelled in the East (Singapore, Thailand, etc.) I couldn't stop raving about the gorgeous bakeries - people thought i was cuckoo :)
