7dp5dt: never a dull moment: with update

Thank you all for your congratulations and your excitement for us! I'll be honest - I was reading a number of your words sitting in Grand Rounds yesterday and some of you made me cry. Really, thank you - so many of you - for taking the time to comment. It's like through your excitement, I can capture some of my own. I get a little shut down about this after all we've been through, but your happiness for us, the outpouring of encouragement and congratulations, broke through and helped me feel my own cautious hopefulness more.

So we are just the teensiest, weensiest bit pregnant. Again. Unbelievable, isn't it?!

I'm shocked. I've been emotionally preparing for over a year now to never be pregnant again, grieving in a way I never had before that maybe I would never see two lines on a test again, maybe I was not meant to ever carry a child, maybe not meant to even have children.

So it is pretty special to be right here. Still pre-beta, even. But here.

But of course, where is here? Here is still a very precarious place.

Yesterday was a busy day that required me to book it between various locations in the hospital. I have been at work all week but keeping pretty sedentary, slow-moving when I have to move, phoning into meetings instead of showing up, keeping fairly desk-bound and therapist-chair-bound. That was not possible yesterday, and I felt nervous about it, nervous that somehow it would jinx things because everything feels so fragile, so "I can't even believe it" still.

It was about 1:30pm yesterday, just after I had taken the huge leap of faith and audacity to schedule an OB appointment with a new OB I want to try out (because, yes, I was worried she would ALREADY not be taking patients with my due date...which turned out to be right, although they let me schedule anyway because I'm on the med school faculty). I ran to the bathroom on my way to yet another meeting, looked down at my pad, and there was pink. Not much, but still.

Ugh. Spotting. Already. WTF?

This has never boded well for me. "Boded," is that even a word?

It wasn't much, not even when I wiped, so I went to the meeting and tried to ignore the increasing cramping and sense of foreboding I was feeling. During the meeting, I decided that as soon as I could, I was canceling the remainder of my day and going home to lie down. After that meeting, Will and I had a brief phone consult with Dr. G at NYU, scheduled long prior to this transfer to discuss their egg donor program. Beyond the weirdness of talking about egg donors while having just gotten a positive hpt, the talk was interesting, actually. He recommended that considering that during our sixth and last pregnancy we lost a chromosomally normal little boy, that we should consider adding prednisone, lovenox, and IVIG to the mix this time...which we're already doing. But I've felt like I'm sneaking around doing, because neither of my REs supports it (Dr. Schl. calls it "hocus pocus"). So it was nice to have another leading RE actually say, yes, you should probably do that with this FET and also with a donor if you end up having to go that route. You may be in that small subset of women who need immunological intervention. Just to hear him say that was worth the whole call. While waiting for him to phone us, I cancelled my two remaining patients for the day and gave my administrator a heads up that I wasn't feeling well and was going home. Will bustled me into a taxi right afterward and I went home and straight to bed, cramping pretty moderately the whole time. Sigh.

The spotting, however, seems to have stopped. Thankfully. The uterine pain - and outside of uterus left-side pain - are still fairly intense at times (it made it hard to sleep), but I'm trying not to freak myself completely out (ectopic! impending miscarriage! lovenox-induced embryo-killing hemorrhage! Ahem, cough.)

I'm semi-successful at moments in soothing myself, at other times failing miserably.

Here's today's HPT:

Doesn't look a whole lot different to me than yesterday - but Will says it looks a little bit darker to him.

I decided I am going to get my progesterone and estrogen levels drawn this morning, just in case somehow my progesterone is too low and that's contributing to the spotting/cramping. I'll throw in an hcg level, you know, since I'm there anyway. I know it's only 12dpo, that I'm probably jumping the gun and being unreasonable, but oh well. I'm giving myself permission to be unreasonable for now...maybe even for the next few months...if I need to be. I'll update this post later today when I get the results.

I asked Will this morning if I was being a little crazy. "A little," he said. Poor Will.

Anybody else have spotting at this stage of the two week wait and have a real, live, take-home baby outcome? Or if I should start getting ready for this to be over, let me know that too.

And thanks - truly thanks - for being out there, and being with us in this. I'm grateful and happy to be here, really, I am, I just wish it didn't feel so tenuous.

Mo

Update at 4:42pm: I finally heard from the nurse at my local NYC clinic. Been sweating bullets over here!

So...

HCG = 69.3!!
Progesterone = 34.3
Estrogen = 442

Not bad for 7dp5dt!

Now just to hope that the beta keeps going up! Phew!

  1. Ugh - I hate spotting, but could definitely be implantation bleeding for you. Hang in there Mo!

  2. Mo...long time lurker. So happy for you! I am 32 weeks along with healthy twins, and I had spotting 12-13 DPO with this pg. It actually continued for several weeks, was super scary but due to low progestrogene and then developed a small SCH. In any case, was told this was much more common with twins...was scary...but all is well right now, so crossing my fingers for you!

  3. Congrats! I had spotting and pretty intense cramping with my first IVF cycle that lasted two days and then stopped (the spotting not the cramping) the day before my beta. The result of that is now a happy, healthy 5 year old boy. Don't give up hope!

  4. I had two opposing high-risk docs equally vocal about me TAKING lovenox and the other absolutely not and 'hocus pocus' I took it with the third pregnancy and that made all the difference. I mean, we can only guess work, but why not err on safety and caution?

I spotted pink with this little guy who is curently attempting to climb onto the table as I type this. I even spotted red at week 7.

DO take it easy though. I know you can't "just relax" but every physical ability you have to slow down take full advantage1

    Fingers crossed!!!!

  5. No spotting stories here, but lots of hope and prayers and so glad that you got confirmation from an authority you trust praising lovenox & IVIg. Holding you up in hope as you put one foot in front of the other and walk as gently as possible. Glad that you're giving yourself permission to seek what you need in terms of phoning into meetings, taking it easy and getting blood draws to make you feel better. Sending up strong prayers for you and Will.

  6. Mo, I know other folks' anecdotes mean very little in the end...but FWIW, I've had spotting at the equivalent of 12dpo in two pregnancies including the one that resulted in Tiny Boy. That pregnancy also had a lot of cramping/pain that didn't also always seem uterine...not enough to go to the ER but enough to make me paranoid about ectopic. (Not that I'd recommend doing so, but that whole saga is at my blog from March 2011 if you're inclined to read). And you should know by now that pee sticks can vary without it meaning anything in terms of beta... And lest you feel like you're overdoing the beta...mine was tested regularly from 6dp5dt until 5w3d, which was after we'd seen a sac in my uterus.

I can't promise it will be fine...but you're doing everything possible to make it so. And so far it seems to be working. My heart is with you.

  7. I actually enlarged both photos of your HPTs and brightened my screen up, then waited til I forgot which was which and looked to see if I could tell if one was darker. I definitely picked the one from today as being distinctly darker. :)

Also, I looked back on my symptoms after my transfer that gave me my quads. I was cramping INTENSELY on 7dp5dt and on 8dp5dt I had bright red spotting that faded to brown spotting for the next week or so. One day difference but your embryos are technically further along, right?

Praying hard. I am transferring today and all I can think about is you!! Big hugs.

  8. Oh Mo, it's scary, but certainly not an 'it's over' sign. I spotted with Henry for more than 11 weeks. Take it as easy as you possibly can, but try not to worry. And please post as soon as you get those numbers!

  9. I've been lurking for well over a year, I think. So happy for you, so glad you're on the immune protocols. I'm pulling for you and checking for updates. :)

  10. Amazing hon - so glad that you have this opportunity, this pregnancy is a blessing, and one that I hope is at last successful for you.

Keeping you in my thoughts through the next frantic days x

  11. Aren't you early enough that this can be implantation bleeding?

Also, a friend who was on progesterone suppositories routinely had pink, bloody discharge that her doc blamed on cervical irritation due to the suppositories. He's currently 30+ weeks with twins, so far, so good.

With my current pregnancy, I had spotting (although I don't think it was as early as you, but between 4 and 9 weeks) and VERY low progesterone, like 6.

They put me on Prometrium my first trimester and my levels only ever got up to an 11.

However, I'm almost 28 weeks now and all seems fine.

With my first pregnancy (resulting in my daughter who is now 2) right after I got the positive- at 14 days post ovulation, I had cramping so bad that I put on a maxi pad convinced my period was coming at any second. I even prepared my husband for impending miscarriage/chemical pregnancy. It didn't happen. Went on to be a normal, healthy pregnancy with a real, live take home baby.

    Hoping/praying/wishing for the best!

  12. I've just started reading your blog and am so happy to see those 2 pink lines! Praying for good things for you!!! =)

  13. Mo--I have been following you since my own IVF cycle in Feb/March of 2010. I had spotting almost immediately...and it continued. I have a real, live (and lively), healthy 14 month old :) I am hoping, praying, wishing that this is lucky number 7for you and Will.
BTW..I spotted throughout my ENTIRE pregnancy. I am not going to lie...it was TERRIBLE and the thoughts that crossed my mind were not fun. But...between my OB and Perinatal doc I managed to make it through. They saw me whenever I needed some reassurance that all was fine. Now I know why my Peri was just rated the Number 1 high risk doctor in Fairfield County!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Given just how early on things are, the spotting could definitely be from implantation, it could be from the hormonal support, it could just be from pregnancy irritation.

The standard rule of thumb, which is to stay hydrated, and rest when you can, applies.

And, I do not think you are the least bit crazy to have mid 2ww levels drawn, including HCG. Just set your mind on the value being low (even though it is registering on an HPT), it could be in the 20s or 30s or 40s.

And, talk to your RE, but my personal experience with early betas (before 8dpt) is that the doubling rule does not exactly apply. There should be progression, but might be short of doubling.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  15. mo,
considering you put 3 good looking, CCS-tested blasts in there, it isn't too surprising that there is some spotting- not to scare you, but that is a lot of potential sticking/implanting/cell-splitting going on in your pristine uterus.

also, does ccrm have you on PIO or suppositories? many people spot with the supps., so that is a possibility too. they had me on supps. and upped them when my p4 was low, caused spotting. switched to PIO- no spotting.

no matter what the reason. spotting is no fun and i hope yours ceases asap. it is torture to be on the spot-watch.

i did fragmin (another form of lovenox) for my successful ccrm pregnancy. dr.sch knew about it, but didn't feel it was necessary- my mfm dr. prescribed it. i think it is *great* you are doing the immune therapies this time- adds more info to the whole picture, and it could be a missing piece.

i am so glad you are taking it easy- and believe me, if i had access to a lab, i would have drawn my beta early too :). just keep it perspective- it is early.

so, keep on keeping on, mo! take it easy! find some non-ivf, non-pg distractions to give yor mind a rest from the inevitable worries. and update when you can. so many are pulling for you, now and always.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh, Mo. Having read blog after blog after blog after blog for year upon year it seems pretty clear that spotting means nothing (also, wouldn't the Lovenox contribute to the likelihood of a broken capillary and thus, faint spots of pink)?

If you're only being a little crazy, I think you're doing an excellent job. Hang in there (and may lucky #7 do the same).

    ReplyDelete
  17. I've got two friends who had full-on, no-holds-barred bleeding during their successful pregnancies. One of these two had already had two losses with early bleeding and, when she had bleeding with the third pregnancy, was told to go home and expect to miscarry - the result is a very healthy 8 year old now. On the donor egg/immune tx front, I had immune tx on our last treatment with my own eggs and it didn't work - that cycle was enough to persuade me that our issue was my eggs and not my immune system. When we did DE, I was on lovenox for an existing genetic clotting condition, but no other immunes. It was an easy decision as our embryos had always been average at best, and the donor egg embryos were fantastic so when the issue of pred came up, I said no. We couldn't afford to do IVIG again anyway. I hated the decision-making process - I always felt so responsible. On our donor cycle, I kind of threw caution to the wind and did exactly what the clinic told me ;-).

    ReplyDelete
  18. I had a tiny bit of pink spotting early on. I think a little later than this, but just the one time. My mother said she spotted throughout her pg with my sister. I think it's wise to take it easy, but it could mean absolutely nothing. Great that Dr. G agrees with all the "hocus pocus." I think it's very smart to have your progesterone checked. I truly doubt that Sunshine would be here if I hadn't insisted on having my progesterone levels checked on transfer day. Considering I was alternating types of vag progesterone every three hours, my levels should have been fine. But they weren't. She is worth every lumpy bruise on my ass, every hideous lovenox bruise, and much more.

Oh, I totally booked my first OB appt before my beta so she wouldn't get too booked up for my due date. I just said I was 45 and pregnant, so she accepted me as a patient. I didn't tell her it was donor embie until the appt.

Hang in there, hon. I'll be blog stalking waiting for the test results. xoxo

  19. Lurker here - I am going in my 7th week of pregnancy (so I say I have a take home baby yet) but started spotting pink and tan for several days before my beta at 11DP5DT for a FET cycle. Monday we went to my RE for bleeding at 6 weeks 1 day - my cervix which is very vascual is to blame for all my bleeding (and still is) but we also saw the flicker of a heartbeat. There's tons of women with spotting of all varieties (tan, pink to bright red - I've been through it all) with take home babies. Good luck. Even my beta number was showing about two days behind than most for my DPO but my doubling time was still at 38 hours. We'll keep the faith for you when you are waivering or lose it during this cycle.

  20. Wow -- I miss one day and you go and get pregnant? Amazing!
I had spotting from the middle of the 2ww through the following 2 weeks. I was terrified. And yet the little one stuck around and is now 1.
I am hoping that this is finally the right time for you.

    ReplyDelete
  21. how did I miss the big news? Much love and congratulations to you. keeping fingers crossed for you for your take home baby

  24. De-lurking to let you know I have spotted with both of my pregnancies right around the time my period was due. My first pregnancy did end in a loss at 26 weeks, but it had NOTHING to do with that early spotting (was a perfect pregnancy up until the end). I am currently 34 weeks along with my second baby, and all is going well. I will be rooting for you that this is finally your take-home baby. XOXO

    ReplyDelete
  25. I had some spotting (brown) early on in this pregnancy (I'm 29 weeks now) and cramping on the side. I was told that unless the cramping is in the middle, not to worry too much about it (Ha! As if!).

The most useful advice someone (my therapist) gave me at your stage of the game was to just accept being in a state of "I don't know." It will help your stress level, and help you actually enjoy what's going on in your body, rather than being scared.

Keep breathing and keep repeating, "It's okay that I don't know."

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have had implantation spotting during the 2WW with every single one of my take home children. Hang in there Mo! Hugs!

  28. Oh Mo, this just sounds so stressful :( I don't have any RLB stories, but, I did a FET in Jan, and had spotting around 11DPO (6DP5DT). I hadn't tested and assumed it was all over. Then I didn't get my period. I'm currently 6w4d (but whose counting?!). The beta at 14DPT was really high. So maybe it's to do with implantation? You are still in the window.

Fingers crossed for you, big time...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I know it's easier said than done, but you're a well-read gal on this subject therefore your intellectual self KNOWS spotting can mean absolutely nothing. So cling on to that, and today, my friend, you are pregnant!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I had spotting - I believe it was 7-8dp5dt. It was pink, then brownish tan for about 18 hrs then stopped. I also had cramping. I was sure it was over. But I got a take home baby!

    ReplyDelete
  31. First of all congratulations on your two pink lines! Second of all i have never been hoping and praying this all works out for anyone as much as I am for you and Will! I had lots of cramping around the 14dpo mark, and was convinced AF was about to show when I was pg with my girl.... and I know spotting is really common too, though I didn't have it until a week later. Very scary and sinking feeling when it happens but in the end it all turned out to be normal. Fingers crossed it will be for you too. xxxx

    ReplyDelete
  32. Rest up, Mom to be!!! Thinking of you.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Spotting, yes, yes,yes...I did IVF/ICSI three times. The two take-home baby cycles were the ones where I not only spotted, but bled. Bled for weeks! The only cycle without spotting ended in m/c at 7 weeks. So bleeding, to me, is not a game-ender. I genuinely hope this is YOUR take-home baby cycle. You deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lurking back by to see if you have results... checked in on our "Details of pregnancies" tab and you need to update it! :-D

    ReplyDelete
  35. Congrats on your positive HPT!!!
I had an FET at CCRM in July and had LOTS of spotting initially, and am currently 32 weeks pregnant with twins. Spotting CAN be associated with a good outcome!
I know the positive HPT is just the start for you (for any of us, really)...am sending you so many hopes and prayers that this cycle leads to your take-home baby. Really. No one deserves this more than you.

  36. OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not bad? Shit, that is freaking awesome for 7dp5dt (my beta with my son was 70 at 10dp5dt)!

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

Revel in it. YOU ARE PREGNANT!

  38. YAAAAY, I am SO happy for you! What a freaking rollercoaster this IVF stuff is. Can't wait to hear that official beta - I know it's going to be great!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hooray! This sounds very promising, and although I don't have experience with spotting, I have read plenty about it and I don't think you can tell anything by it. I'll keep checking for more updates and have everything crossed for you!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thats a great beta! So hoping it doubles and the spotting stops.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think the test looks darker today too!...I agree with Will...and that is a fine fine beta for 12 dpo! So glad you have another on Saturday and again Monday. I will be watching for updates. Our surrogate had a positive hpt 6 dp5dt, and 3 days of spotting and cramping right after. We are now 37 weeks pregnant. You've got more positive reasons to explain the spotting, than negative, and I am very very optimistic!

    Thinking of you...

  43. This just makes my day so much brighter! Our embryos didn't survive the thaw today so we didn't transfer after all, but I am really so happy to see such a beautiful beta for you! I continue to send you all my thoughts, prayers, and strength.

    ReplyDelete
  44. oh sonja, i'm sorry to hear about your embryos not surviving the thaw. we had shipped six of ours to denver in 2010 and none survived the thaw. it was such a disappointment. hang in there. and thank you - you're pretty incredible to be sending us congratulations on such a disappointing day for yourself - says a lot about you as a person : )

    Mo

    ReplyDelete
  45. First off - GREAT beta @ 12 dpo!! YAY!!! All of your levels look awesome! Whew!
As for spotting, oh yes, the spotted (and cramping) started just about the second I got my + HPT with my second IVF (my living breathing twinnos now), and I continuted spotting/bleeding until 8 weeks (and all was fine!). I bled again (SCH) at 14 weeks for 10 days, then finally after that the bleeding stopped. My RE told me SO many times that spotting is so common with IVF patients...it's almost expected. I don't know that I ever believed her, but we absolutely have two beautiful girls out of the deal, so I'm not questioning it.
I agree with the other posters of course...try to relax as best you can...drink lots of water...but most of all, enjoy the moment! Right now you are pregnant...PREGNANT! Amazing! And there is nowhere else you'd rather be =). Try to stay focused on that.
Saying some extra prayers for you Mo...

  53. Yay! Just the news I was looking to hear today. Great beta for the equivalent of 12dpo BTW!!!

Would you mind posting the details of your anti-miscarriage protocol? I hadn't heard of the claritin/pepcid cocktail before you mentioned it.

Hoping for a great beta when you do the repeat. And of course a sticky pg.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wow, you updated with the beta # while I was still busy reading everyone's comments, and I'm so glad you did! On the edge of my seat over here! What wonderful news. That is a *terrific* number, especially for this early. I know there's a very wide range of betas, but here's just one other reference point for multiples: at 14dpo my beta with triplets was 193. At 16dpo it was 531. Doubling time of 32 hrs. I spotted during the 2WW (despite PIO), but made it to almost 33 wks. It was implantation bleeding.

I realize how precarious this place is in any pregnancy, and more intensely so after multiple losses like you have endured. I'm holding you and Will in my thoughts and continue to hope with all my heart that this is the pregnancy that will bring you your baby/babies to raise and love.

  58. That looks like a healthy pregnancy, both in terms of beta and progesterone. No idea how the Estrogen is, don't have a normal range for that.

I checked, the betabase is back up- you should have fun playing with this, with a beta like that, you are kinda ahead of the mean at this point.

  74. Mo, 69.5 on only 7dpt is great! Don't read too much into the spotting or bleeding. It's VERY common in IVFs. As you may recall from my blog, on my last cycle I prayed and wished and hoped to make it to six weeks. Every hour without seeing blood was a small victory.

On 5w3d, I was fine at 3:30 pm - no sign whatsoever. Suddenly at 6 pm I felt a very sudden and heavy gush of bright red blood.

I am now standing in front of my two miracle children who were born as a result of that cycle. Dreams do come true!

  77. That's a great beta this early! Oh Mo - you are good and pregnant! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! (And ignore the spotting. I'm sure it's nothing. Every doctor I've ever asked has said it's very common and it usually is un-eventful.)

I have been following your harrowing journey for, well, years, now. I am so hopeful that this time it will work.

  83. Hi Mo...I have not blogged in forever and in fact I made my blog private for now. However I am still following blogs. I have been following you for a while and have commented in the past but it has been forever. I am so glad to hear that you are doing the immune protocols to the fullest. I can testify that they do work as I will be celebrating my sons 1st b-day this Saturday after 4 miscarriages. I did IVIG my entire pregnancy..along with Lovenox...predinsone...and other meds as my horomones changed throughout my entire pregnancy. My insurance did not cover IVIG but I was lucky enough to contact the drug company nd wrote a letter telling our story/situation and as a one time thing they donated the drug to me throughout my pregnancy. I had some spotting on and off throughout my pregnancy but my spotting was usually due to bleeds from the Lovenox. I was on alot of modified and strict bedrest and because I am a occupational therapist and did heavy lifting/on my feet all day they took me off of work my entire pregnancy. I think they were a little over cautious but for us this was it so I was glad they did this. Anyways enough abt me. I am so over the moon happy for you guys and will say a prayer for you and your husband. If you ever have any questions abt anything I went through please feel free to email e at kklendworth@yahoo.com All of this pain/heartbreak/treatments are 100% worth it!!! I would do it all over again times 3 to have what I have now. God Bless.

  85. Great beta! As I said before I had that left side pain and I too worried it was ectopic. It wasn't. It was triplets!

I think it was the corpus luteam trying to form in my ovary. I had twitches there for quite a while. I also had spotting on and off for the first ten weeks or so. Awfully stressful but turned out I had a little tear in my womb.

Your spotting could be implantation at that time though.

    Anyway yay you! Xxx

  86. Been lurking for a long time, over here and just had to comment this time. Congrats, Mo and Will! I really and truly hope you've done it this time (and believe you have). :)
I have a 16 month old and am now 36 weeks pregnant with my second child. I spotted in both pregnancies (the first one, for 13 weeks...). I believe it's pretty common so, try not to worry too much and enjoy this as fully as you can. You really deserve it.
I'll be ruling for you (all the way across the atlantic ocean). :)

  89. It's OK to be crazy. This is a more difficult time for you than for 99% of women. You do what you have to to get through it.

I spotted with both my children (in my daughter's case, spotting is a severe understatement). Here's hoping that this time it's a positive sign for you too!

  90. PS Also cramped like crazy with my daughter. I *have* heard that this is common with repeat pregnancies, although I couldn't point you to any scientific back-up for that.

  91. Awesome beta, Mo! I am rooting for you and this baby. Hang in there with the spotting.

  92. I too went for a beta at 7dp5dt because I was spotting and for my own sanity, my RE agreed to test before I lost my mind. Mine was 135 at this point and I had twins so 69 is a good beta for you at this point and probably indicative of one baby. The HPT also looks darker to me. Hang in there and try to relax.

  93. I had cramps that sent me to the hospital (the pain led to a BP spike of 200/150) and that baby is home and peacefully sleeping right now.

I so hope this is The One (or Two, or Three...) for you guys!

  94. Biggest congrats to you Mo! I have read your blog for a long time although have admittedly been a lurker. I am so happy and hopeful for you. I had spotting at 10 Weeks for my pregnancy with my son and it was nothing. I just found out I am preggers again 3 days ago, but I think if I have spotting again I will still worry. I think it is just a scary time so best to be gentle with.yourself. best wishes to you both.

  95. i've been without internet all week so this is my first chance to say CONGRATULATIONS! May this pregnancy be long and healthy and happy with a wonderful ending!

  96. Yes! After my 4tg IVF, I got a bfp and I was full on bleeding. I was sure it was a bfn, but my hcg was like 60 and my babe is sleeping in my arms right now! My RE said its very common and though there is no way to prove it, he suspects that it is the embie that didn't implant. Sticky vibes to you Mo!!!!
