I went in today for a little live baby check. I'd been feeling ok about things until Saturday or so...by then I was starting to get pretty anxious about the pregnancy again (just because it had been about a week since we'd seen the baby, not because anything was "wrong").
So today for the first time, I had an abdominal ultrasound.
Baby is still alive!!
Was sleeping at first, but when the OB turned on the doppler to check the heartbeat, this seemed to wake him/her up (interesting because I don't think the baby can hear yet, but it's obviously disturbing in some way). Once it woke up we could see its little arms and legs waving around.
All looks good!
Here's a little peek. Don't be alarmed that the baby looks like Pinocchio. My OB assured me that that was its hand up by its mouth, not a giant wooden nose.
Will and I are trying to let it sink a little. We are pregnant! We are still pregnant. Trying to hold that maybe things are going to be ok. That there is no indication of any problem. That maybe, just maybe we are finally going to be parents, come this fall.
One step at a time. But boy, that would be amazing.

I've read that the only noticeable effect of the ultrasound (and doppler) raise the temperature of the fetus by a slight amount. All of these procedures are considered super safe and have been done for ages, but the frequency by which doctors do these scans on women is much higher than in previous times. Also, my specialist RE in RPL practically refused to measure the heartbeat on my first two or three scans, citing that she'd just returned from a conference where there was evidence to convince her that eyeballing was safer than measuring. Only measuring if she felt that the heartbeat was slow. I became paranoid at some point about cooking the kidlet with too many U/S or using the doppler too often. Hence the use of it only in moments of pure panic. Figuring a freaked out stressed womb was also harmful to growing baby.
ReplyDeleteI am very excited for your progress and continue to wish you all sorts of new things. This is unfolding fantastically!
Hooray! Happy Monday news. Keep up the good work. :)

ReplyDeleteLet's call this baby, something else than the baby....How about Pinocchio?
So glad for you...and hoping to see nothing but positive updates from you!
I am thrilled for you and Will, I have been following you for the past 3 years. I stopped looking at your blog following your last loss as I was devastated for you and Will - I can only imagine what you were experiencing. I check in every day and am happy for the day when you post. Best wishes for a happy, healthy pregnancy
ReplyDeleteHuzzah!!!
ReplyDeleteI am so incredibly thrilled for you and Will. This has been such a long time coming... and you've both worked so hard. I am keeping all of my positive energy flowing your way for a wonderfully uneventful (dare I say fun!) pregnancy!
ReplyDeleteHello Pinocchio! What a cutie :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing is right. I am so very happy that things are going well so far and I pray regularly that things continue as "normal" and problem free as they have been. As much as I want to have another baby very much, I do not envy you these early weeks! They are so, so hard: exciting and terrifying and overwhelming.
Remember to be good to yourself: anything you find calming or soothing or just selfishly indulgent is a good thing right now. If you're anything like me, you'll finally start to relax a little around 30 weeks. I'll be waiting to cheer you on!
Totally just logged in just to make sure you were still pregnant. YEAH!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHello baby- and wahoo on abdominal ultrasounds! You're movin' on up! So happy that all is well!
ReplyDeleteGo, go, Pinocchio!
ReplyDeleteOur Bean looked basically like Voldemort at the 20 wk scan. The sonographer was like, "look how cute!" and the wife and I about passed out.
He's really not at all lizardy now.
I AM THRILLED FOR YA'LL!!!! Think of you multiple times a day and say a prayer every time!!
ReplyDeleteHave ya'll told anyone else? How did it go?
So exciting! I'm so happy when I see you there in my reader and it's still good news!
ReplyDeleteLook at you guys!! You're doing great. :) So glad to see this beautiful sight. I don't know about you but whenever I see ultrasound photos from this point on and I can see the hands I just want to be able to reach in and shake their tiny fingers. :D
ReplyDeleteOh, how cute! Yes, that would be some nose! Haha
