...well, sort of...

Will called me. For some reason, the RE called him instead of me. It is 14 days past retrieval and my beta is 48. Per the message the RE left for Will (um, who is the patient here?!), they have been following it this week (I had blood drawn on Monday and Wedsnesday, so they've been following it at least since Weds.), and it has been rising, so we know it's not just/still the HCG booster.

So...I don't know how to feel; 48 sounds low to me, but I'm not sure if it could still be viable. Don't get me wrong - we are grateful for anything at this point. Have been feeling like my uterus snuffs out all forms of life this past year. Even a chemical pregnancy would be a flicker of hope. But maybe...just maybe...I almost don't dare to hope...I don't want to type it for fear of jinxing it...could it maybe a lasting pregnancy?

I have a call in to the RE to find out what the beta has been during this week of secret beta testing. (I only knew they were testing my estrogen and progesterone levels, sneaky IVF people!) I am also, of course, dying to know how fast it has been rising and what my RE's take is on an HCG level of 48 at this stage of the game.

In the meantime...as usual, I turn to you guys. Anybody have a beta this low turn out to be an actual, living child nine or ten months later? Anybody have a beta around this level at all? What happened? It's OK to share both positive and negative outcomes.

Thanks for checking in - some of you multiple times today. It means so, so much to us.

More to come, either later today or tomorrow.

I feel like my heart is going to beat its way out of my chest.

Mo

  2. I think 48 is a more than acceptable number. I have read on various boards of initial betas being as low as 10, and leading to successful pregnancies and births.

The fact that the level has also been rising all week is also a good sign! I really hope this works for you this time (I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first comment).

  3. I did. My first beta was 49.5. My RE said it was a "great number" so I never worried even when all my cohorts were reporting betas of 100+ with singletons too. I just *knew* it was fine. I went on to have a perfect pregnancy!

    CONGRATS MO!!!!

  4. I think it's a good number!! And if it's been rising appropriately, that's super important!
    I'd say it's a GO.

Not to sound like a broken record but: no day but today, Mo. And today, you are pregnant!

  5. YAY - so happy for you, congratulations! Not sure exactly what day you are on but I had a first beta test on 20 DPO (or past egg retrieval) and it was 152. I know you are way earlier than that at the moment. Mine increased steadily but did not double every two days. I am now 16 weeks along with the same pregnancy and everything seems good so far. I talked to the doctor about it at my 12 week scan and got told that people often make too much of the early numbers, it's a continued rise that matters. Sounds viable to me! :)

  6. I've been following your blog and have been so touched by your story, you've been in my prayers and I am so excited to hear of your beta. There is hope - we went through 4 IVF's and 2 m/c and we were finally blessed with a son. But our first beta was 3.7, not 37, 3 . 7 :), our second beta was 12 and so on. We ended up in our RE's medical journal because it was all but unheard of to have a healthy, live birth with that kind of beta start. So it is possible, don't lose heart or hope. You will continue to be in my prayers - blessings to you :).

  8. Wow, I positive beta! That's a great first step. I understance your hesitation but take it a day at a time. For today, you are pregnant, girl!

48 is a fine number. It's not too low, and anyway as you know it's not so much the actual number as the rate at which it doubles so hang in there. I know it's hard but just focus on the positive!

  9. No beta advice....but just so happy for you. Hoping for nothing but good from here on out.

  10. Oh, Mo! The beta who is now my son was 123 17 dp r/t, or in other words, about exactly where yours is (no, really mine would have been lower). I was a very nervous (for good reason, given a long history of BFNs) first timer and I did look it up and found that right around 50% of pregnancies with my first beta at that point go on to become babies. Fortunately I turned out to be on the right side of that coin flip.

It sounds to me like you are somewhat, if not wildly, better positioned than I was when I finally got my happy ending. I hope your experience this time will mirror mine that go 'round, which was a boringly healthy and uneventful full-term pregnancy.

I hope you are able to get whatever additional information you'd like to have that the clinic's got, but you know the reality which is that what happens, happens. As I say, I hope it's all good from here on out.

  11. You're pregnant!! I've been waiting all day for your news. From my understanding, that's a perfectly fine number. As has already been said, it's the doubling that matters. For today, enjoy it. POAS to watch the second line appear if you want to.

I'm so happy for you!! xoxo!!

  12. I can't offer advice specifically about betas after IVF, but I CAN tell you that I had a beta of 20 at 12dpo. The nurse at my RE's office actually said: "Well. Technically you're pregnant." That was 33 weeks ago. We're awaiting the arrival of our little guy in just under 3 weeks.

Do NOT give up! There is hope! :)

  13. I think it is a great number! My friend had one that started at 38 and she now has 3 kids, including that one, so try (yea I know easier said then don, but I did say try) not to worry.

That very sneaky IVF clinic. Let us know what they say about the rising levels this week.

    CONGRATULATIONS!

  14. I have no idea whatsoever, but I do hope it's good.

  15. That sounds like a great start to me! I know it is the most common for women to first test positive on a HPT at 13-14 dpo. Most of those tests detect 15-25, with a digital at 50. So that sounds just about right for the numbers that you are reporting.

I am sure that you know about www.betabase.info, right? It has average and ranges of beta numbers for each dpo.

Take this one day at a time. Good luck!

  16. I'm going to offer you a very cautious congratulations....I've got everything crossed for you for more good news tomorrow!

  17. I have no answers or even guesses for you, but I am so happy for you. Best of luck!!!

  18. Mo, I've always been told that they look for approximately 50 as a first beta (14dpo), so you're right where you need to be! Enjoy this happy moment as much as you can, here's hoping it's the first milestone of a healthy pregnancy.

  19. I've been obsessively checking AND I know many women with betas as low as 35 with real live babies. So happy for you guys.

  20. Can't even tell you how happy I am ..for both you and Will. 48 is an incredibly acceptable number ...I know it's easy to obsess over the # when the # is all you have (I certainly did)...but in the end ...the protocol worked, right? Perfect embryo. Implanted. Now we need lots of stick and divide thoughts sent your way!

  21. HI!! I have been following for a while now and not sure if I have commented but this definitely calls for a big comment and that is YIPEE!!!!! I am so excited for you both and that is great news! Congratulations and hehee that sneaky doctor.

  22. Like barefoot, a very cautious congrats from me (but I am barely keeping my voice below squealing).

The way I understand it, anything in the double digits can lead to a viable pregnancy, and if the numbers are rising, hell, that's even better.

  23. I'm no expert and I have no personal experience, but I think 50sounds great!!! Congrats and I'll be pulling for you little one!

  24. Oh hot damn, Mo! 48 is definitely within the realm of normal pregnancy numbers for where you're at. I am going to be stalking your blog every other day now.

So very excited and happy and hopeful for you!!! You've made my day!

  25. Mo! That is great! You have a positive beta! 48 is a perfectly fine number. I understand wanting to be cautious, but I think there is definitely hope here! Congratulations!
